The Mount Mary Church is Mumbai's best known church.
It is visited by Christians and non-Christians alike.
It is situtated on a hillock in Bandra. It is dedicated
to the Mother of Christ and in September, the festival
of the Virgin Mother culminates in a week long small carnival,
popularly known as Bandra Fair or Mount Mary Fair.
Stalls sell sticky Goan sweets and wax idols of the
Virgin along with an assortment of candles shaped
like hands, feet and various other parts of the body.
The sick and suffering choose one that corresponds
to their ailment and light it in Church, with the pious
hope that Mother Mary will consider their appeal.

History of the Church

1640 - First Chapel on the Mount
1669 - Mount Mary's becomes a place of pilgrimage
1678 - Original Chapel enlarged
1761 - Chapel rebuilt
1904 - Present Basilica erected on the occasion of the
 Golden Jubilee on (8th Dec. 1854) by Pope Pius IX.
 
1950 - Marianella, the Priests' Residence is built
1954 - Year of the National Marian Congress (4th - 8th Dec)
 
The Shrine was raised to the dignity of a Minor Basilica
 by Pope Pius XII Oratory built in front of the Basilica
 in honor of Our Lady of Fatima.

 Sunday Mass - 6.30am, 7.30am, 8.30am, & 9.30am (English)
